  1. Wash dal 3-4 times and soak in sufficient water for 4-5 hrs or you can soak overnight.
  2. Transfer the soaked dal to pressure cooker add turmeric powder,sliced onions,salt,2 Tbsp of mustard oil and enough water(6-7 cups)to the dal.
  3. Cook in pressure cooker for 5-6 whistle or 20-25 minutes.Make sure you put enough water in a dal,else dal can burn in the pressure cooker.
  4. When cooked set aside,and let the cooker pressure release naturally.
  5. Puree the tomatoes along with garlic cloves and set aside for later use.
  6. Heat oil in a pan add tej patta,black cardamom,cloves to hot oil and saute for a minute.
  7. Add cumin seeds, cook for few seconds when seeds start to sizzle add chopped ginger and cook for few more seconds.
  8. Now add chopped onions and cook until onions turns translucent in colour.
  9. When onions are done add coriander powder,red chilli powder and amchur powder to cooked onions.Stir for a minute make sure do not burn the spices.
  10. Add tomato puree,salt to onion spice mixture and mix well.
  11. Cover and cook for 10-15 minutes on medium flame or until oil starts oozing from the sides,stir in between otherwise your masala will get burnt.
  12. On other side of gas stove place cooked dal cooker on low -medium heat uncovered.
  13. When tomato onion masala is prepared add mixture to black dal and mix well.
  14. Let the dal cook uncovered on low flame for about 30 minutes or till it reaches the desired consistency.Stir in between.
  15. Dal can be thin or thick adjust consistency as per your prefrence.
  16. Once done turn off the heat and serve hot with missi roti,plain roti or rice.
